Beyond our inviting neon lights, colourful drag shows and pulsating beats, The Port Bar holds a purpose that resonates deeply within the LGBTQ+ community and society at large.
The Port Bar is a sanctuary for.. LGBTQ people. In a world that marginalizes LGBTQ+ voices, we offer a refuge where people can dance, laugh, and love freely. We have been doing so since July 2016 but now our landlord, wants to stop all of that.
The Port Bar is a nationally recognized bar, known as one of the establishments that serves the community beyond pouring a simple drink. Beyond our inviting neon lights, colorful drag shows and pulsating beats, The Port Bar is a community center for the East Bay’s LGBTQ+ community… but with alcohol.
The Port Bar has been the one of the epicenter of LGBTQ+ community building in Oakland. We serve as meeting points for support groups, LGBTQ+ organizations, and individuals seeking like-minded friends. The connections made within these walls often extend beyond the bar, creating lifelong friendships and support networks.
The Port Bar has been at the forefront of advocacy efforts, raising awareness about LGBTQ+ issues and contributing to the fight for equal rights. The Port Bar hosts fundraisers, meaningful drag shows, and awareness campaigns that extend the community's reach far beyond their walls.
By simply existing and thriving, The Port Bar sends a powerful message of LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance. During the pandemic quarantine, The Port Bar served as a safe gathering place that served all Oaklanders in need of a safe, clean place to experience community. We took our programming to the streets where it has been regarded for activating Broadway as well as giving people hope during a dark time.
Since the Day The Port Bar opened, the majority of staff have been queer people of color as well as performers such as GoGos & Drag Queens. The Port Bar has been recognized nationally as a leader in ensuring a welcoming space for all people.
